Stage 1 – Initial Consultation
Our Dental Implant procedure starts with an initial consultation where we will talk about what you would like to achieve from your treatment. We will discuss all aspects of the implant procedure and assess your suitability for this type of treatment. You will have a full dental examination including x-rays and we will ask you some general questions about your health and lifestyle. This assessment will give us an indication of whether you have sufficient bone in your jaw to support implant placement, a CBCT scan will also be arranged to confirm this. When we are satisfied and confident that dental implants are the right option we will create a bespoke treatment plan for you with accurate costings.
Stage 2 – Implant Placement
The placement of your Dental Implant(s) is relatively straightforward and will be carried out in surgery under local anaesthetic (just like most dental procedures). Once you are numb a small incision will be made into your gum and then a small hole will be drilled into your jawbone. If we have determined that a bone graft is necessary it will be carried out at this time. The titanium implant is then inserted into the hole and the gum is closed with stitches. If you are having same day implants your teeth will be ‘restored’ (i.e. your crown will be fitted) on the same day however in most cases your bone and gum will need to be left to heal before we can move on to the final ‘aesthetic’ stage of your treatment. If you are concerned about a visible gap during the healing period we can discuss fitting temporary teeth or a denture in the interim.
Stage 3 – Restoration
Following implant placement it is normal to wait for around 3-6 months for the implant site to heal fully and for the implant to bond strongly to your jaw bone. When we are confident you are fully healed we will fit your replacement tooth or teeth. This comprises an implant abutment (a post connecting implant to crown) and finally your crown, bridge or denture which are all custom-made to fit the size, shape and colour of your existing teeth.
Aftercare is crucial to the long-term success of your Dental Implants and will be discussed at the outset of treatment and throughout your Dental Implant journey.
