Why is Dental Hygiene so important?

With more adult teeth being lost though gum disease rather than tooth decay, regular hygiene treatment is essential in keeping your gums and teeth healthy.

Prevent Gum Disease

Our experienced Dental Hygienists are experts in treating, stabilising and preventing gum disease. Gum disease can lead to chronic inflammation, infection, receeding gums, irreversible tooth mobility and bone loss if left untreated. Our Dental Hygienists will carry out a full assessment and tailor any periodontal therapy to your requirements. This includes scaling of teeth (using the latest ultrasonic scalers) and removal of plaque and tatar which can extend below the gum-line. Periodontal therapy, carried out at regular intervals is proven to improve gum health and therefore your general oral health.

Prevent Bad Breath

Bad breath can leave you feeling embarrassed and insecure and is often caused by gum disease. Regular scaling alongside our dietary and lifestyle advice is proven to improve and prevent bad breath.

Top Tips for Brushing your Teeth

  • Don’t forget to floss or use an interdental brush before you brush your teeth
  • Don’t wet your toothbrush before you apply toothpaste
  • Two is the magic number. Brush for two minutes, twice a day
  • Brush in circular motions with a manual toothbrush. If you use an electric toothbrush, let the brush do the work
  • Avoid brushing backwards and forwards
  • Make sure you brush every tooth
  • Brush your tongue to get rid of bacteria and bad breath
  • Don’t rinse your mouth after brushing- it’ll wash away the fluoride

FAQs

Plaque is a sticky, colourless deposit of bacteria that is constantly forming on the tooth surface. Saliva food and fluids combine to produce these deposits that collect on teeth and where the teeth and gums meet. If plaque is not removed by regular brushing it can harden, build up and turn into tartar which can only be removed by a Dental Hygienist or Dentist. Tartar (also known as calculus) can make it difficult to brush and floss properly and may lead to decay (cavities), gum disease and bad breath.
When teeth are overcrowded it can be challenging to maintain good oral hygiene as some surfaces of the teeth are inaccessible with a toothbrush or smaller, interdental brushes. This can cause a large build up of plaque and tartar between the teeth and can also accelerate the rate of tooth decay and gum disease. Dental Hygiene services can certainly help to clean those hard to reach places and decrease the rate of decay. We can also offer advice about possible orthodontic solutions (such as Invisalign) to correct crowding permanently.
If your gums are bleeding or receding you may have gum disease that requires attention. Bleeding / receding gums can be caused by a build up of tartar but also in some instances are a result of aggressive brushing. Indeed there are a number of other factors that can cause gum issues including hormonal changes and family history. Try not to worry, receding / bleeding gums are quite common and there are things we can do to halt progression of gum disease. Our friendly (and expert!) team of Dental Hygienists are on hand to give you the advice and reassurance you need.
Yes! Many Dental Hygienists are qualified in ‘Dental Therapy’ and are therefore able to carry out fillings and other treatments such as the application of fluoride varnish.
Having your teeth cleaned should be a comfortable experience. If you have gum disease your treatment may be slightly uncomfortable (but certainly bearable) but please rest assured our Dental Hygienists are experienced in dealing with patients and do their utmost to ensure comfort during treatment. If you are concerned about discomfort please let your Dental Hygienist know.
