What is Intra-Venous Sedation?
Intravenous Sedation (IV Sedation) is a method of conscious sedation used to help you relax during dental treatment. Sedative medication is administered through a small cannula in your arm, working quickly and effectively to make you feel calm and anxiety free in readiness for your dental treatment and as your treatment progresses. Sedation is a safe and effective way of ensuring anxious patients can remain conscious yet calm during treatment. Sedation also acts as an amnesiac so in most cases patients have limited recollection of treatment and can therefore look back on the experience positively.
Is Sedation Right for You?
Patients often benefit from sedation if they:
- Have severe dental anxiety or phobia
- Prefer to have reduced awareness of any dental treatment
- Have a history of gagging during dental treatment
- Are having long or complex dental treatment
Sedation is extremely safe and available to most people however there are some medical conditions / medications that may preclude you from having sedation. Your Dentist will assess and advise on your suitability for sedation.
